A-Z of Music – Alphabeat

Alphabeat formed in 2004 and have only just released an album last year in Denmark with their self-titled debut, but success was instant and their debut album went platinum in their native country. The song of the same name was an instant hit and has helped gained attention from larger labels in Europe. Finally, Alphabeat chose Charisma Records for their master plan.

The mix of 80’s pop with indie rock blends with the almost harmonic singing duo of Stine Bramsen and Anders SG. Now it might not be the first pop indie-rock band, and it certainly won’t be the last. But there is a difference with the feeling. Quirky, bubbly, and just plain happy, each song gets you dancing to the tune. “10,000 Nights of Thunder” is your simple, cheery love song, while “Fantastic Six” could be the unexpected club song of the year, one which get everybody jumping to their feet. I challenge any living being today that they can’t hum, sing or move their feet to the infectiously catchy chorus of “Fascination”.

Amazingly, they call themselves a pop band before rock. So too do similar acts such as The Ting Tings and even Hard-Fi, bands you would never consider to be similar to the manufactured boy/girl bubblegum pop bands of the 90’s. Rather than set their own tone of music, they seem to be content with making pop cool once more. With songs like “Into The Jungle”, I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened sooner rather than later.

Overall, the band is never going to set the world alight as a rock band to remember, but that doesn’t matter. The tunes are bubbly and just plain fun to listen to. Alphabeat should be taken as their music; bubbly people with happy songs just having fun along the way.

With all the hype and air-time this band is receiving around Europe, it is astounding to think they have only just released their debut album, This is Alphabeat, in the UK. But, despite myself not being a musical genius, I think it’s fair to say from the reaction they have had so far here, that their debut album “This Is Alphabeat” in the UK will be one of the most successful releases of the year, and we will all be dancing along to that.
