Brighton night ‘Somewhere in the Universe’ is changing. They’ve become known for putting on some of the biggest parties in town with an alternative take on dance music which puts West Street to shame. Earlier on this year they played host to one of the first ever live gigs for both Little Boots and La Roux (Click here to check our coverage on that). They’ve also recently put on cutting edge acts like Boy Crisis and just-signed-to-Vice-records Katie Stelmanis (Yes, THAT Vice)

In their third year of activity it seems like they are taking a step-back from the banger-heavy house styling of yesterday and settling on a new, more mature sound. It’s a step that can only be good when they put out a most magnificent mixtape featuring blog favourite acts such as Boy Crisis, Casio Kids, Vega, Yelle, Fan Death, Yacht and Passion Pit, as well as big hitters Justice, Hot Chip and Little Boots.

Women that like sitting on curbs smoking the ‘cigarettes’, eating ‘McDonalds’, and looking at bottles of ‘Smirnoff’.

These species are red blooded and only come out at night.

They like to sing covers of old ‘Depeche Mode’ tracks, a popular music act from the late 80s.

If you put ‘Smirnoff’ into your phones predictive text, it says ‘poisoned’.

They have all recently been courted by ‘Designer Drugs’. I heard there was a little bit of a drama, but not too much.

‘Designer Drugs’ are from New York and have done remixes for popular music acts such as ‘Tigersapian’, ‘Little Boots’, ‘IAMX’ and ‘Red Blooded Women’.

They also have a self produced track called ‘Zombies!’ which was used at the beginning of an earlier ‘Mustard Pimp’ mixtape, it is good.

The BBC today announced their top tip for success in the music world of 2k9. With La Roux at #5 and Empire of the Sun at #4, it’s no surprise to see another electro/nu-wonk starlet reach the top spot. Well, I’ll admit I was a little surprised as I was beginning to get a little tired of her tracks ‘Stuck on Repeat’ and ‘Meddle’. Luckily I managed to find some of her (most likely) album tracks tucked away neatly in my iTunes library and though I’d share one with y’all just to keep the spirit alive.

The second is an absolutely fantastic remix of Stuck on Repeat that hit the blogs in early November. It’s got much more of the nu-disco feel than the Fake Blood remix and certainly exaggerates the best parts of the original.

Seeing as previous winners include Adele, Mika and Keane, it’s hardly an award to scoff at. It does go to show that awards like these are really just self fulfilling prophecies, giving major media outlets something to hype throughout the year.

I’m sure we’ll be hearing a lot more from this ex-pop idol contestant as the year goes on.

The Golden Filter are from New York, and are embarking on a UK tour in a few weeks (They will be in Brighton on the 21st of November). They’ve really got that cute disco sound that Little Boots is championing but with an added touch of Hercules and Love Affair.

Filling up YouTube with her own unique cover versions of Hot Chip and Alphabeat tunes, Little Boots is also a talented DJ in her own right, bringing a little bit of Soulwax double-act to her live shows and bumping up her musical curriculum vitae.

The world is so often plagued with enigmas; Who shot Kennedy? Was the death of Princess Diana planned? Who is Cartman’s Dad? With the latest craze in independent dance music to subscribe to the whole masked look, it’s no surprise that someone came along under this cloak of secrecy causing listeners everywhere to guess who this anonymous producer might be.

Producing some of the most danceable glitch house in a while, Fake Blood remixes popular groups such as The Black Ghosts, Bonde Do Role and The Kills converting their radio friendly, sugar laced tunes into grungy, get down low fidgety house. Fake Blood’s remixes bring with them a bass kick which smarts to the chest with a sound reminiscent of that early 2000’s UK Garage sound. Also like seemingly every other DJ out there, s/he is a creator of their own self produced works. ‘Mars’ has been hitting clubs country wide with it’s infectious early 90’s rave synth sound and messy breakdowns.

Whoever Fake Blood is, they have certainly kicked up some free marketing with this whole blogwide guessing game. Having been compared to Boy 8bit, Diplo, DJ Tiesto and even Theo Keating from The Black Kids, it doesn’t really matter. Chances are Fake Blood is just some extremely talented, bedroom bound rave kid with no desire to be featured in the next issue of Heat magazine.

Best Tune: Mars.

A hyperactive mix of hand claps, 90’s rave synths, glitchy beats and this horribly catchy animal like groaning make ‘Mars’ one of the most memorable tracks of the summer.
